The Picasso bug (Sphaerocoris annulus) is a shield-backed bug found in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania, where these images were taken. It is known for the colorful, symmetrical pattern on its back, which looks like abstract art. These bright colors warn predators that the bug is not good to eat, and when threatened, it can release a bad-smelling odor to keep attackers away.

The bug has a hard shell for protection and feeds mostly on plant sap. At just 8–15 millimeters (0.3–0.6 inches) long, the Picasso bug uses its colors and odor to survive.
