The Mwanza flat-headed rock agama (Agama mwanzae) is a small, colorful lizard native to East Africa. Males are especially eye-catching, with bright red or violet heads and deep blue bodies, a look that’s earned them the nickname “Spider-Man lizard.” Females and young males, on the other hand, wear dusty browns and grays that help them vanish against the rocks.

Most adults measure about 15 to 23 centimeters (6 to 9 inches) in length, with the largest males reaching nearly 30 centimeters (12 inches) from snout to tail. True to their name, Mwanza flat-headed rock agamas have a noticeably low, flattened head and a slim, agile body built for life among boulders and outcrops. When startled, an agama can vanish in an instant, diving into a rock crack or darting off at high speed.
