The Catalina Island fox (Urocyon littoralis catalinae) lives only on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California. They are Catalina's only endemic mammal and the island's largest native land predator.

These foxes are tiny, described by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the smallest fox species known from the United States. Adult males average around 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) and females around 1.88 kilograms (4.1 pounds). Measured from nose to tail tip, they are 59 to 79 centimeters (23 to 31 inches), and at the shoulder they stand only 12 to 15 centimeters (5 to 6 inches) high. That is roughly the shoulder height of a domestic cat.

The coat is gray and white across the back with cinnamon underfur, rusty brown along the ears, neck, and sides of the legs, and black outlining the chin, lips, nose, and eyes. Coloring varies quite a bit between individuals, from mostly gray to a warm honey brown. Conservancy biologists estimate that wild Catalina foxes live about nine to twelve years.

Why Are They So Small?

Island foxes evolved from a gray-fox-like mainland ancestor. They are roughly a third smaller than their closest living relative, the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), and are a classic example of insular dwarfism, the pattern where animals isolated on islands evolve smaller body size over generations.

Islands have limited food and limited space. With fewer large predators and fewer resources, a smaller body can be an advantage, because it requires less energy to maintain. Over many generations, the population evolves a smaller average body size.

A 2015 study of island fox mitochondrial genomes, led by researchers at the Smithsonian, concluded the change may have happened within roughly 2,000 years. That is a model-based estimate, but it points to a fast change for something this dramatic.

Island foxes are also the only living members of the dog family confined entirely to islands. Other island carnivores exist, but almost all of them have mainland populations too. These do not.

How They Got There Is Still Being Argued

A natural crossing of open ocean would have been difficult for a fox, so the first arrival on the Channel Islands still needs explaining, and researchers do not fully agree on the answer.

Earlier genetic studies proposed an older arrival on the northern Channel Islands, perhaps more than 16,000 years ago, with rafting on storm debris sometimes suggested as the mechanism. The same 2015 mitochondrial study points to a later window, roughly 9,200 to 7,100 years ago, and leaves open whether they rafted or were carried by people. The oldest known island fox remains date to around 6,000 to 7,000 years ago, after people had already reached the islands, which is part of why human transport remains a serious possibility.

The second leg of the journey is better documented. Catalina sits in the southern group of Channel Islands, and the genetic and archaeological evidence suggests that people moved foxes from the northern islands to the southern ones, likely on purpose. On Catalina, the Indigenous people are the Tongva. Island foxes are documented as having held cultural significance for Channel Islands peoples.

So the foxes on Catalina today may well be there because someone put them in a boat.

Almost Gone in a Single Year

In 1999, canine distemper virus reached Catalina.

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease of dogs and other carnivores, and it moves fast through a population with no prior exposure. The Catalina foxes had little or no prior immunity to the virus. The outbreak is widely thought to have been introduced by a raccoon that arrived from the mainland, possibly as a stowaway on a boat.

Federal recovery documents put the decline at about 1,342 foxes in 1994 down to roughly 103 by 1999 and 2000, a loss of more than ninety percent. A remnant population survived in the western part of the island. In the east, foxes were essentially gone.

In 2004, the subspecies was listed as federally endangered. The Department of the Interior later noted that at that point the foxes had been given about a fifty percent chance of going extinct within the following decade.

The Comeback

What happened next is one of the more effective conservation responses on record.

The Catalina Island Conservancy and its partners, along with the Institute for Wildlife Studies, built a captive breeding program, translocated foxes from the surviving western population into the emptied east, began vaccinating against distemper and rabies, and set up intensive monitoring so a new outbreak would be caught early rather than discovered after the fact.

The population was estimated at 1,114 adults in 2012 and had risen to more than 1,700 by 2015, roughly its pre-crash level. The Conservancy's 2025 monitoring report put it at 2,162, an increase of 188 over the previous year.

Catalina's fox is one of six island fox subspecies, each living on a different Channel Island, and four of them were listed as endangered in 2004. In August 2016, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acted on all four at once. The three from the northern islands, San Miguel, Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz, came off the endangered species list entirely. The Department of the Interior described it as the fastest successful recovery of any Endangered Species Act-listed mammal in the United States, with the three subspecies delisted twelve years after listing.

Catalina's fox was the exception. Instead of being removed from the list, it was moved down one step, from endangered to threatened, meaning it had recovered enough to be reclassified but not enough to lose federal protection.

The reason is that Catalina is a tourist destination with a resident human population, regular boat traffic, and pets. The northern islands are national park land with far less coming and going. More traffic means more chances for the next disease carrier to step off a boat, so the Catalina population stays under closer watch.

The Ear Problem

Catalina foxes develop ear canal tumors at a rate almost nothing else in the wild matches. In a study of foxes that died between 2001 and 2008, 48.9 percent had tumors in their ears. Among mature foxes aged four and older examined in 2007 and 2008, the figure was 52.2 percent. The researchers called it one of the highest tumor rates ever documented in a wild animal population. Some are benign and some are cancerous.

It appears to start with a parasite. Ear mites have turned up in nearly every Catalina fox examined since the 1990s, and Conservancy scientists believe they arrived on the island with domestic cats. The mites irritate the ear canal, and that irritation can persist for years. Over time it can drive abnormal growth in the ear's wax-producing glands, and foxes with those changes are far more likely to develop tumors.

Researchers have not explained why this happens only here. Foxes on San Nicolas and San Clemente also carry heavy mite burdens, yet ear canal tumors have never been documented in those populations. Stranger still, no case was recorded on Catalina before the distemper crash. The first was found in 2001.

Researchers suspect the answer lies partly in the population's genetic history. Catalina foxes already had low genetic diversity before the crash, and losing all but about a hundred animals may have narrowed it further. A 2022 study read the full genome and found no single cancer gene. Instead, it turned up a scattering of candidate genes, which suggests the vulnerability is spread thinly across many of them rather than caused by one.

The practical response has been to go after the mites. A field trial tested whether clearing them would reduce the inflammation and gland changes that come before tumors, and mite treatment is now standard during the island's annual health checks.

Parasites in general are becoming a bigger problem. In the 2025 monitoring season, about 85 percent of captured foxes carried at least one ectoparasite such as lice, fleas, or ticks, up from 70 percent the year before. Conservancy scientists say contact with dogs, cats, and deer may be contributing to the increase.

What They Do for the Island

Catalina foxes carry real ecological weight. They are omnivores, eating insects, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and a substantial amount of fruit. They move around the island and deposit seeds as they go, which makes them contributors to seed dispersal for native plants, while their hunting keeps mice and insect numbers in check. No other native land predator on Catalina matches them in size and breadth of diet, so those roles would go largely unfilled without them.

Island foxes are also tolerant of people. That makes them easy to photograph, but it also makes them easy to habituate to people, which is a problem. In 2025, the Conservancy documented 41 fox deaths, 24 of them linked to human activity. Eighteen were vehicle collisions, making traffic the leading documented cause of death that year. The Conservancy is asking drivers to hold to the 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour) speed limit on its roads, particularly after dark when foxes are most active.

Every fall, teams on Catalina trap and examine hundreds of foxes. In the 2025 season, they captured 374 individual animals across 584 total captures, checking health, treating ears, microchipping new foxes, and vaccinating against distemper and rabies. The population is stable and has rebounded dramatically from its late-1990s low, but it is stable because that work happens every year, not because the threat went away.
